Pitra Dosha Calculator

Pitra Dosha (also written Pitru Dosh) is an affliction in the birth chart that, in Vedic astrology, points to unresolved obligations toward one's ancestors. It is said to show up as repeated obstacles, delays in family matters, or strained relationships despite sincere effort.

Astrologers look at the Sun and Moon (the karakas of father and mother), the 9th house of ancestors and dharma, and the 9th lord. Common indications are the Sun or Moon conjunct Rahu or Ketu, malefic planets in the 9th house, an afflicted 9th lord, or Saturn aspecting the Sun or the 9th house.

The houses of the chart are set by the ascendant, which changes roughly every two hours and shifts a degree every four minutes. Whether a planet sits in the 9th house, for instance, depends on it. A guessed time can show or hide the dosha, so the calculator asks for the closest time you have.

No. It is an astrological indication, read differently across traditions, and not a prediction or a judgment. Most families have some ancestral rites to honour, and the remedies are acts of remembrance and charity rather than anything to fear.

Traditional remedies include Shraddha on the death anniversaries of ancestors, Tarpan during Pitru Paksha and on Amavasya, feeding crows and Brahmins, donating food in the ancestors' names, and Pind Daan at Gaya, Varanasi or Trimbakeshwar. Our pandits also perform Pitra Dosh Puja.

Pitru Paksha, the 15 days before Navratri, is the most powerful time for ancestor propitiation. Amavasya (new moon) days through the year are also significant.
